A new career in Cornwall
My name is Robyn and I've been with Brandon since September 2020. I work at a supported living residence in Cornwall for eight adults aged 23 to 35. They all have their own flat and require different levels of support. I'm part of a big team of 18 support workers, which I love! Having a good team behind you makes the job a lot easier.
Before I became a support worker I worked in retail for 15 years. After I was made redundant from my role with Debenhams at the start of the pandemic, I took a few months off while I tried to find what I wanted to do next.
I had a few friends who worked in care so decided to look into it. When I read the job description, I was sold. I love being outdoors and doing anything active, so why not share that with other people who need it?
Adventures and ambitions
Despite the lockdowns and restrictions, I've already managed to take some of the people I support paddleboarding and zip-wiring. The aim is to get people out and about and help them live their lives to the fullest, and Cornwall is perfect for doing that. There’s so much you can do and so many nice places to visit.
The job has definitely lived up to my expectations, and even exceeded them. I've settled in really well. It's a career you can come into at any time in your life – the ages of people on my team range from 21 to 60 and everyone brings something different.
I do see myself going further within support work. I recently did a couple of months as a team leader which was really good experience. Overall though, seeing the people I support smile and knowing that I’ve helped them is the best bit of the job for me. You really are making a massive difference.
